Headmasters can cane students: Alimuddin

PUTRAJAYA: School headmasters, principals and discipline teachers are vested with powers to cane undisciplined students under the Education Act, said Education Ministry director-general Datuk Alimuddin Mohd Dom.
“Their powers can also be delegated to other teachers, provided certain guidelines are followed and among the main guidelines are that students cannot be caned in public, their indiscipline must be recorded and a witness be present when the student was being caned.
“Such regulations and guidelines do exist in the Education Act,” he told reporters after chairing a meeting to discuss students’ involvement in crime, here yesterday.
The meeting was attended by police, Malaysian Crime Prevention Foundation (MCPF), state education directors, state police chiefs, Bukit Aman CID director Datuk Seri Mohd Bakri Mohd Zinin and MCPF deputy chairman Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye.
